UC San Francisco Chancellor Sam Hawgood held his annual State of the University address on Nov. 7, an event that covered a range of topics including trust in higher education, artificial intelligence, and UCSF’s education mission.

During the address, Chancellor Hawgood sat down with John Davis Rodríguez, PhD, MD, vice chancellor of the Office of Education and Student Affairs (OESA), along with Nicquet Blake, PhD, vice provost and dean of the division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA), in front of a live and virtual audience.

Chancellor Hawgood asked Dr. Davis Rodríguez to talk about his thoughts on the increase of technology, including artificial intelligence, in modern education and curriculum.

“What excites me is the combination of AI with other aspects of learning sciences,” he said. “Leveraging the data we have to serve our learners will minimize time to degree, allow students to progress, and get us back to competency-based education that is time variable.”

In addition to discussing the transformative potential of AI in education, the address also emphasized UCSF’s commitment to supporting students’ overall wellbeing.

OESA’s Basic Needs for Students program was highlighted, with the chancellor announcing that in the past year, the program has reached 80 percent of UCSF’s student body through its services, totaling more than 2,400 students.
