The Office of Education and Student Affairs (OESA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Erick Hung, MD, as assistant vice chancellor for Education and Student Affairs, effective Aug. 1.
In his new part-time role, Dr. Hung will help lead the education portfolio within OESA, advancing strategic initiatives that strengthen educational excellence, foster innovation in health professions education, expand interprofessional learning opportunities, and support faculty educators. He will also work on key student affairs initiatives to enhance student support and the student experience across UCSF. In addition to this role in OESA, Dr. Hung will continue as associate dean for students in the School of Medicine and remain clinically active in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
A nationally recognized educator, student affairs leader, and longtime member of the UCSF community, Dr. Hung brings extensive experience in educational leadership, curriculum innovation, faculty development, learner success, and student wellbeing.

A Career Dedicated to Education and Student Success
Dr. Hung has devoted his career to advancing health professions education and supporting learners across the educational continuum. A UCSF alumnus, he earned his medical degree at UCSF before completing his psychiatry residency, chief residency, and fellowship training here. Since joining the faculty, he has held numerous leadership roles, including associate dean for students, director of curricular affairs for Graduate Medical Education, vice chair for education in Psychiatry, and Psychiatry residency program director. Through these roles, he has led significant initiatives in curriculum innovation, learner assessment, faculty development, and student support.
Dr. Hung also brings a national perspective to the role through leadership positions with the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. His experience will help support UCSF’s continued leadership in health professions education.
Advancing Education, Student Success, and Collaboration
As associate dean for students in Medicine, Dr. Hung has led initiatives that strengthen advising, student wellbeing, belonging, career development, and learner success through integrated, data-informed approaches to student support. His work has also advanced competency-based education, faculty development, and innovative approaches to learner assessment.
A longtime advocate for interprofessional education, Dr. Hung has developed collaborative educational programs that prepare learners for team-based, patient-centered care. In his new role, he will partner with faculty, staff, students, and leaders across UCSF to strengthen collaboration among the professional schools, expand faculty development opportunities, and advance educational innovation throughout the university.
