The Office of Education and Student Affairs is excited to announce the selection of the interim director and interim assistant director for the Program for Interprofessional Practice and Education (PIPE), following the retirement of longstanding Director Maria Wamsley. These two faculty leadership positions will oversee interprofessional education for students while fostering faculty and staff to lead, teach, and develop interprofessional practice and education for the 2026-27 academic year.
Angel Kuo, EdD, CPNP, FNAP, FAANP, has been appointed interim director of PIPE, and Dr. Rose Monahan has been appointed interim assistant director. Dr. Kuo will lead the unit, which is charged with the development and oversight of interprofessional curricula for learners in the schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy and the Physical Therapy program at UCSF.
“Interprofessional education prepares our students to work on highly functioning teams to enhance patient care, public service and research,” said Education and Student Affairs Vice Chancellor John Davis Rodriguez. “Dr. Kuo and Dr. Monahan bring extensive experience and leadership, and we’re thrilled to have them represent the PIPE program.”
As PIPE’s inaugural associate director, Dr. Kuo played a pivotal role in shaping the program's growth and strategic direction. She has co-led the development of classroom, simulation, and clinical curricula; co-chaired the curriculum committee; and led the Interprofessional Collaboration Scholars Program, an innovative longitudinal program preparing future health professionals for collaborative practice. She also serves as faculty in the Teach for UCSF Interprofessional Teaching Certificate Program, mentoring educators across the campus, and has helped expand recognition and support for interprofessional clinical teaching through new faculty and team development initiatives.
Dr. Kuo is a health sciences clinical professor in the UCSF School of Nursing and brings more than a decade of leadership in interprofessional education, advancing collaborative learning, faculty development, and team-based practice across UCSF's five health professions schools/programs.
Dr. Kuo earned her BSN and MSN from the University of California, Los Angeles, and her EdD in Organization & Leadership from the University of San Francisco. She has more than 27 years of interprofessional clinical experience as a pediatric nurse practitioner in Pediatric Urology and has practiced at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital since 2010, where she provides culturally responsive care to children and families in San Francisco's safety-net health system.
Beyond her interprofessional leadership, Dr. Kuo has held numerous campus leadership roles in administration, educational policy, faculty development, and workforce development, including vice chair in the Department of Family Health Care Nursing, chair of the UCSF Educational Policy Committee and principal investigator for multiple federally funded HRSA workforce development initiatives that prepare advanced practice nurses to serve underserved communities. She has collaborated extensively with faculty, clinicians, and community partners to strengthen interprofessional education, clinical training, and the healthcare workforce.
Dr. Monahan, assistant professor in the School of Medicine, is an allergist and immunologist who cares for patients with a wide variety of allergic and immune deficiency conditions. Dr. Monahan earned her medical degree from the University of Virginia. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Los Angeles County and the University of Southern California (LAC+USC), followed by a fellowship in allergy and immunology at UCSF. She has special interests in medication allergies and medical education with a focus on interprofessional education. Dr. Monahan coordinates an interprofessional rotation in allergy clinic for medical, pharmacy and advanced practice nursing students. She also devotes much of her time to educating doctors training in UCSF's allergy and immunology fellowship program.
